Global Technology Law and Policy: Advanced Issues in IT Law (LLAW 6106, 2016-2017)

Course Description

This course examines legal and policy issues relating to information technology (IT) from a comparative, global perspective.  It covers a wide range of issues involving how national governments regulate the technology of the Internet and how private citizens’ rights relating to the Internet are protected. Issues to be canvassed include privacy and personal data, internet jurisdiction, regulation of internet marketing, issues in electronic transactions, internet governance, domain name business models and disputes, intellectual property challenges for new business models, legal issues raised by cloud computing, as well as net neutrality and telecom regulation.  The 2016 syllabus and course website can be found at http://www.michaelgeist.ca/hku-advanced-it-law/.

 

Lecturer: Professor Michael Geist

Michael Geist is a law professor at the University of Ottawa where he holds the Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law.  He has obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, Master of Laws (LL.M.) degrees from Cambridge University in the UK and Columbia Law School in New York, and a Doctorate in Law (J.S.D.) from Columbia Law School. Dr. Geist is the editor of many books including Law, Privacy and Surveillance in Canada in the Post-Snowden Era (2015, University of Ottawa Press), The Copyright Pentalogy: How the Supreme Court of Canada Shook the Foundations of Canadian Copyright Law (2013, University of Ottawa Press), From “Radical Extremism” to “Balanced Copyright”: Canadian Copyright and the Digital Agenda (2010, Irwin Law) and In the Public Interest:  The Future of Canadian Copyright Law (2005, Irwin Law). He is also the editor of several monthly technology law publications, and the author of a popular blog on Internet and intellectual property law issues.

Admission requirements

Applicant should either be a Bachelor of Law degree holder, or a Legal practitioner, or both. Non-Law applicants are also welcome.

Award

Certificates will be issued to participants with two options:
(1) a Certificate of Attendance (requires at least 70% class attendance without taking any formal assessments) or,
(2) a Certificate of Completion (requires at least 70% class attendance and successful completion of the formal course assessment).

Course fee

HK$6,500 for participants who do not intend to take assessment but would like to obtain a Certificate of Attendance (not eligible for application for CPD points); or
HK$13,000 for participants who will complete the assessment and would like to obtain a Certificate of Completion.

Form of Assessment

25% class presentation, 75% final paper.

Law Society CPD Points

Practitioners may claim up to 15 Law Society CPD points.
